An introductory course in genealogy will be offered
at the Pine Library in two sessions -- March 10 and March 17 from 10:00 am to
12:00 pm. The course will introduce the basic concepts and procedures which
help guide the beginning family historian in their search for the history of
their family.
Topics included (but not limited to):
• Start with yourself and work backward.
• Mine the memories of the elder members of
your family.
• Gather family records from archives.
• Work methodically.
• Document each piece of information.
• Understand the difference between primary and
secondary resources.
• Understand the benefits and limits of
computer research.
Registration will begin immediately and must be
ended by February 10. Those who have registered for the course must make a
commitment to gather the available information on their own family and bring it
with them to the first session.
• Do you have your own birth certificate? You
need a copy to apply for Social Security.
• Do you have a copy of your marriage license
or certificate?
• What do you have in the way of documents or
oral family history about your family? If the
history is oral, make notes about
this oral history.
This is the kind of information you need to gather
in order to start researching your family. Bring what you have to the class.
If, for instance you do not know how to get a copy of your marriage license,
then you have a valid question about how to do this for yourself and your mother
and father and grandparents. Death certificates give very valuable information
about the parents of the person, and where the person was born that can be used
in accessing other records. How do you access this information?
This class will not be a class which presents how
to access online computer resources. This is a class which will present the
basic principles of family history research and get you started in beginning an
analysis of the information you currently have about your family and directions
you can take to add to the information you have and to progress in developing
your family history.
Forms for a pedigree worksheet, or family group
work sheets, will be available at the library and are
online, by clicking on the following links:
PEDIGREE WORKSHEET FORMS:
http://www.ancestry.com/trees/charts/ancchart.aspx?
FAMILY GROUP WORKSHEET FORMS:
http://www.ancestry.com/trees/charts/familysheet.aspx?
If you do not feel comfortable with these forms,
the class will address how they aid your research and how to fill them out.
Mentoring sessions can be available for those who want more individual focus on
their issues.
The instructor, Judy Voran, is a retired librarian,
has taught family history seminars in the Payson/Pine area, and has spent thirty
years researching her own family history.
